Emotional Trauma in Adventure

Emotional trauma from incidents in adventure sports often involves grief, guilt, and shame, which can lead to anxiety, fear of re-injury, and post-traumatic stress. These challenges can undermine an athlete's confidence and impact their relationship with the sport and their community. In this series, we interview adventure sports professionals to share their personal experiences with trauma and explore how our community can better support those navigating these emotional struggles.

When you think you've done everything right and you’ve had the worst outcome, its really hard to understand where to start again

One of the jarring moments afterwards… is that life continues. This awful thing happened, but then we have to eat dinner that night, and you have to go to sleep, and you have to wake up… its all the same things we did yesterday but nothings the same

I've been doing mountain sports for 40 years, and in that time I’ve lost 29 friends… and its that continual load of when will the next call come. So if I ever quit these mountain sports, its not because I’m bored, it's because I don't want to get those calls anymore.
